State of the art. What do we actually mean when we say this? Why does the concept of art change over time and take on new meanings as the boundaries of our thoughts and behaviour evolve? And what can we draw from past experiences to open us up to new perspectives? Moderated by Marco Sammicheli, director of the Design Museum of the Triennale di Milano, Conrad Shawcross a recognized artist in the prime of his career who constantly pushes the boundaries of disciplines, and expert communicator Sarah Douglas, now working with the Steve Jobs Archives, together they discuss how we can only see glimpses of the future by not placing formal limits on imagination and solutions.

CONRAD SHAWCROSS
Imbued with an appearance of scientific rationality, Conrad Shawcross’ RA (b. 1977) often monumental sculptures explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. Over almost three decades, Shawcross has paid tribute to some of the great pioneers and analysts, and considered specific moments or figures from the past. Shawcross’ art dons a cloak of rationality in order to conceal its more poetic heart. Interrogating what we take for granted and encouraging us to see beyond the physical and remember how limited our perception envelope really is. Shawcross has completed numerous monumental public commissions and has been exhibited in galleries and institutions across the world.

SARAH DOUGLAS
Sarah Douglas is a consultant at the Steve Jobs Archive, an agent for Martino Gamper, and an advisor to brands and cultural institutions.
