Design talk: Domesticating the digital
On the occasion of Design Festival 2022, the Rimadesio London flagship store hosted the talk “Domesticating the digital” organized in collaboration with the architecture magazine Disegno. At the center of the discussion there were digital design and the adoption of ethical principles to protect online users. Our daily lives are now an unstable balance between physical and virtual reality, the boundaries of which are becoming less and less delineated.

However, while physical spaces are generally developed to ensure comfort and convenience for their users, it is not as obvious that developers know how to adopt the same human-centric criteria when developing digital platforms or apps. In an increasingly hyper-connected world where the data system dominates, is it still possible to create balanced online experiences without overdoing profiling, dark patterns and intrusive advertising?

Led by Editor in Chief Oli Stratford, the panel discussion featured industry experts such as Tom Greenwood (Director of Wholegrain Digital and author of the book Sustainable Web Design) Marie Foulston (Creative Director specializing in virtual environments), Paul Gulati (Director of Universal Design Studio) and activist Keisha Bruce.
